End of year donation crush - Who to support?

Wed Dec 06, 2006 at 06:38:24 AM PDT

It's that time of year - when the world of non-profits sends out appeals for financial support as donors look to load up on 2006 charitable write-offs.  But where are my tax-deductible dollars best sent?

Rumsfeld to America: You're idiots

Wed Nov 08, 2006 at 05:36:38 PM PDT

I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised by this attitude; Bush's buddies Ken Lay and Jeff Skilling considered themselves "the smartest guys in the room" and used an argument that if you didn't understand their accounting practices....well, you were just stupid.

Well, Don Rumsfeld essentially said the same thing about the War on Terra as he was shown the door by Bush:

The great respect that I have for your leadership, Mr. President, in this little-understood, unfamiliar war, the first war of the 21st century -- it is not well-known, it was not well-understood; it is complex for people to comprehend.

Will the media coverage for 43 match 41?

Wed Oct 25, 2006 at 08:54:12 AM PDT

August 19, 1988, President George Herbert Walker Bush issued the following statement in New Orleans as part of his acceptance speech for the Republican nomination for President in 1988:
I'm the one who won't raise taxes. My opponent now says he'll raise them as a last resort, or a third resort. When a politician talks like that, you know that's one resort he'll be checking into. My opponent won't rule out raising taxes. But I will. The Congress will push me to raise taxes, and I'll say no, and they'll push, and I'll say no, and they'll push again, and I'll say to them, "Read my lips: no new taxes." (Emphasis added)
As we know, this pledge did not stand the test of time.

Per CNN: Get ready to get reamed over Gannon

Aaron Brown, CNN's NewsNight host, e-dropped his daily show preview in my Inbox, and behold what he had to say about tonight's show, under the fold...

JournalGate - Can the WSJ survive?

Sat Jan 15, 2005 at 04:37:09 PM PDT

Ladies and gents, this is serious stuff in the world of print media.

The Wall Street Journal has been a widely-respected newspaper for many, many years....much like CBS News with Dan Rather.

Remember this tally: 74-1

Two competing issues collided in the Senate today: Civil Rights v. Presidential Politics.

Presidential Politics won.

Do the Democrats need their own Newt Gingrich?

Sun Dec 26, 2004 at 07:16:33 AM PDT

It's interesting that this concept - that the Democratic Party should finally step back, retool and reframe itself to become a REAL majority ruling Party - has reached all the way to the Fort Wayne [Indiana] Journal-Gazette.  There's something afoot when those in "flyover country" are reading local columnists (yes, I know, Smith is located in Washington) who are preaching this message.

And Smith has a good premise, which I'll display below the fold:

Chew on this: How you could have had my vote

Sun Nov 07, 2004 at 07:51:33 PM PDT

In the few minutes that I spend away from dkos, I check out one of my alma mater's (I bet you can guess which one from my ID) fan sites.  This particular site has a thriving open discusion board that tends to lean conservative, but has a liberal underbelly based in the Catholic social worker movement.  Fascinating stuff, to watch the "CSW" folks battle with Opus Dei'ers.  My theology is poor enough that I dare not enter most of those frays.

But, in looking through their special Election Board (the mods were sick of polluting the lamentations about the Cubs and other meatier current events discussions with the messiness of election talk), I caught this interesting post and thought I would pass it along to you, and I post it below the fold:

All is NOT well in Democrat-land

Found via the Drudge Report:

Fort Wayne (IN) Journal-Gazette: After 2 tries, Parra flees debate over stage fright

"I'm not used to being in front of the camera. ... I couldn't get my words out. I was just overwhelmed," she said after the aborted debate, which was being taped at WPTA and which would have been aired this weekend. The matchup has not been rescheduled and is not likely to be.

Bush has cottonmouth

Wed Oct 13, 2004 at 06:35:51 PM PDT

Short diary entry...

I'm interested to see that Bush has developed a case of cottonmouth.

I've done a little public speaking, and I only get it when either I'm nervous or my allergy medicine dries out my mouth.

As I type, Bush grabbed a sip of water.  Verrrry interrresting!

Fahrenheit 9/11 DVD just shipped from Amazon

Mon Oct 04, 2004 at 12:06:40 PM PDT

Thought you'd all like to know, I received an email saying that the F9/11 DVD just shipped from Amazon.com.

Back when the movie first came out, there was a lot of discussion about how to maximize the political value of the release of the DVD, which we understood was to be one month in advance of the election.

Let's reopen that dialogue.

29 Democratic Senators must step up NOW

Mon Sep 27, 2004 at 08:44:22 PM PDT

One persistent line of criticism of the Democratic Party is that we do not have a consistent lineup of Democratic elected officials who regularly appear on the cable and/or Sunday network political talk shows to advance Democratic ideals and candidates.

The Republicans, on the other hand, have done a masterful job of placing a number of identifiable "personalities" on the airwaves to reinforce RNC talking points.

It's time that the Democratic Senators step up to the challenge and rally behind Senator Kerry going into the November election.  The D's need to put forth every effort - just like the R's are - to win this thing.  They need to leave no stone unturned in their drive to remove George W. Bush from office an give John Kerry the coattails leading to a Democrat majority in the Senate and the House.

There are 29 incumbent Democrats who are not facing an election this year.  I submit that these folks ALL must step up to the challenge.  They need to be on TV, unashamed of promoting John Kerry and Democratic candidates nationwide.  They need to be headlining last-minute fundraisers.  They need to tell Paula Zahn, Wolf Blitzer, Linda Vester and Shepard Smith that their talking points are vapid at best.  These folks are totally safe.  They can be our standard bearers as they literally cannot lose this cycle.

Fall vacation reading suggestions

Sun Sep 05, 2004 at 09:47:45 AM PDT

I'm going on a 1-week vacation with Mrs. IA, and she's spending half the week in a seminar while I'll be hanging out, waiting for dinner with her.

So I figured I'd better bring a few books to pass the time and expand my knowledge. (As Covey says, "Sharpen the Saw"!)

Can I have some suggestions?

Ay Caramba! The Dems RESPOND!

Thu Sep 02, 2004 at 08:22:22 PM PDT

As I type, McAuliffe is giving GREAT Democrat talking points on Bush v. Kerry.  As the confetti and balloons are falling.

Unreal.

Is this the sign of things to come?

Kerry at midnight.  Can't wait!

Music selections for a new politics?

Sat Aug 21, 2004 at 09:56:10 AM PDT

In my little corner of Indiana, we're going to try the improbable: We're going to try to merge the activist Dean/Wellstone/progressive Democrat movement with the institutional county Democratic Party.

It's going to be a huge challenge.  We're going to have to merge cultures - the big money, low involvement, rapidly aging Democratic Party with the the younger, small dollar, high energy activists.  I honestly don't know if a merger can be accomplished, but our numbers are small enough (hugely Republican area...or at least non-Democrat area) that we really have no choice.

So I was thinking - How can we set the tone at our first joint gathering?  Free food helps, but I want to keep costs down.  Then the idea hit me - Music.

If but for Columbia...

Mon Jul 26, 2004 at 05:44:07 PM PDT

As I sit here, watching CNN fall over itself in reading the RNC talking points, I can't help but think of the recent space shuttle disaster.

Why?  Perhaps because had that horrible accident not taken place, we wouldn't have Wolf Blitzer as the lead anchor on CNN's political coverage.  I'm not kidding.  Aaron Brown was the man.

John Kerry on why he's running

Mon Apr 12, 2004 at 10:27:10 AM PDT

A quick Google of "John Kerry announcement South Carolina" landed me at this page, which contained a full transcript of his announcement speech, which follows.

Kos raises a VERY valid point when he wonders aloud, "Why is John Kerry running?"  Being a reasonably fair guy, I thought that we should let Senator Kerry speak for himself.

And, if a speech announcing one's candidacy for office doesn't tell you why he's running...well, that's a problem.

I'll let you decide.
